Why Us?
Boats
We have the perfect fleet for you to learn to sail on. Our Sailing Academy has its own fleet of five modified J24 Keelboats. J24’s are the best size boat to learn on and ours have been purposely modified for Learn to Sail.
Instructors
We have a great team of Instructors at our sailing academy. Our instructors are dedicated to giving you the best sail experience available. Our instructors are Yachting New Zealand qualified and have a huge amount of sailing and Coaching experience to share with you.
Instructor to Student Ratio
On each boat we have four students and one instructor, this means you are an active part of the crew the whole time, as well as getting much more attention from the instructor.
Follow on Courses & Support
Our goal is not only to give you a sail experience, but to invite you into regularly sailing and racing out of our Club. We offer a comprehensive training program, from Learn to Sail through to advance racing and crew placement on other members boats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I meet?
Please meet at reception, Buckland’s Beach Yacht Club, Ara Tai drive, Half Moon Bay.
What do I need to bring?
A change of clothes, note pad and pen, lunch, and drink, suncream and jumper. You may have to allow for more to drink than usual. We provide life jackets, and wet weather gear.
What should I wear?
Sailing requires physical effort so ideally clothes should allow you to move freely. Bring a few layers of clothes, it is often quite cool when on the water. Track pants and sweatshirt for cool conditions and shorts and T-shirts for warmer days. Boat shoes or sport shoes preferably with a light-coloured sole. Sailing gloves if you have them to prevent rope burn. Sun protection i.e., hat, sunglasses, sunscreen etc. A zip-up bag to keep your gear in.
What if it is wet and windy conditions?
If it is going to be wet out there, we have wet weather gear available, no need to buy any. If it is too windy to go sailing, we will have a shorter theory session at the Yacht Club. If is too windy two weeks in a row during your course, we will reschedule to use the reserve day.
